Response to Threat
Change (especially BIG change), can be scary.
Do you ever wonder why FEAR takes over keeps you feeling locked down and stuck?
Here’s why: When you are very afraid, or feel threatened, you aren't able to think and function in the ways you can when you are at ease. That’s because a stress response has been initiated, and your autonomic nervous system kicks in- offering you the following options: FIGHT, FLIGHT, FREEZE or FAWN. (Notice how “THINK,” “PROBLEM SOLVE,” and “TAKE ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE” are not available options when you are in this state).
Until the fearful feeling has moved through you, and until you have closed the loop of that experience, you will likely, on some level, remain activated, in a stress response. The feelings need to be discharged, the loop needs to be closed. And then once the loop is closed, then you can access your higher faculties, calm and center yourself, and consider the situation from new perspectives, possibly creating new meaning.
I wanted to share a clip from the most recent It’s TIme for Change group call. Here I am sharing about a recent experience I had, where I was in a stress response.
